Gospel Harmonies joins Texas Gospel Canada lineup

Alan Cook - Gospel HarmoniesTexas Gospel Canada is VERY happy to announce the addition of Alan Cook’s Gospel Harmonies to our programming lineup.  Alan is a veteran in Christian Broadcasting.  He has a half-century of broadcast history, four decades of that involves the Gospel Harmonies program.

According to the Gospel Harmonies website, the program began as a 10-minute feature in 1973 on two stations in Michigan.  It expanded to a half-hour nightly program on the Family Life Radio Network in 1979 and today it is syndicated as a 54-minute program on Gospel stations in the United States and Canada.

Gospel Harmonies will air each Sunday morning at 7 a.m. Central on TexasGospel.org.  We look forward to having Alan’s program kick off this weekend.

Ohio church celebrates 200 years

An Atwater, Ohio church is celebrating its 200th anniversary.  The congregation will mark the two-century mark with a special service on Sunday. According to a Facebook event listing, the celebration will include Heritage Fifes and Drums and an Abraham Lincoln impersonator.

The church was established March 21, 1818. To put this in perspective, this was 43 years before the start of the civil war and only 15 years after the Louisiana Purchase.

The church will display a hand-written copy of the congregation’s dedication sermon from 1841 when the building was completed, according to an article in the Record Courier newspaper.

Police hate crime section investigating Long Island church vandalism

Police in Manorville, Long Island have not yet determined a vandal’s motive for smashing out the face of a statue of Jesus at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island Church.

2018-03-15 Statue damaged on Long IslandThe vandalism happened between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.  A report from ABC7 says investigators have not yet determined if the incident is a hate crime. The news outlet said the Suffolk County Police Hate Crime Section is, “taking a closer look” into the incident.

“Come and talk, if you want to talk about your issues with God or with the church…We’ve been praying. We’ve even been praying for the perpetrator, that hopefully he will convert and change his ways in life,” said Rev. Roy Tvrdik to News12 Long Island.

Police ask anyone with information about the vandalism to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

PA man arrested for vandalism of two church buildings

Police in Pennsylvania say they arrested a man responsible for vandalism at two churches.

Richard A. Lowe, 40, of Meadville, Pennsylvania, is charged with two counts of vandalizing a place of worship according to a report from The Meadville Tribune newspaper.  Police say Lowe put graffiti on the buildings of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church and The Altar International House of Prayer.  The graffiti included vulgar and derogatory messages.

Jail records show as of 8 a.m. Thursday Lowe remains in jail held in lieu of $10,000 bond.  If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Hubert Cooke, founder of The Singing Cookes, passes away

A longtime name in Southern Gospel music has gone to be with our Lord.  Hubert Cooke of the Singing Cookes passed away Monday afternoon from issues related to his heart.

A family representative posted the following to the group’s Facebook page:

Sorry for the late post but it’s been a difficult time for us. Dad (Hubert Cooke) passed away Monday around 3:50 PM. from heart failure. His request was not to have a funeral and to have a short grave side service. He also requested to be taken back to His childhood Home of Norton Virginia and be buried with his Mom, Dad and some of his brothers and sisters. Tomorrow we will honor his wishes. Please pray for our family. “Earths Loss Is Heavens Gain”

Hubert Cooke worked as a coal miner for 16 years.  He left the mine in 1962 and became a fulltime Bluegrass Gospel performer.  The group’s first national Southern Gospel release, He Rows Me Over The Tide, made its debut in 1977. It was a huge success for the family and it was re-released the following year.

According to WYMT Television, there will not be a funeral.  He will be buried in his childhood home of Norton, Virginia with his mother, father and several siblings.
