Jacob’s Ladder and the Son of Man

JEFF TURNER

When Jesus speaks to Nathanael in John chapter 1, he makes a striking promise involving heaven opening and angels ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. This statement deliberately echoes an earlier scene from Genesis, where Jacob dreamed of a ladder stretching from earth to heaven with angels moving along it.

By drawing on this familiar image, Jesus identifies himself directly as the Son of Man and signals that those around him would witness supernatural power flowing through him. Heaven, in effect, would open, with divine action and truth communicated through his words and deeds.

I believe this was Jesus indicating that his life was not just the result of ordinary human effort or cleverness, but was instead a direct channel through which heaven’s power entered the world. Everything he taught, every miracle he performed, could only be explained by this supernatural connection between heaven and earth, made visible and active through him.

And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

John 1:51
