Thought for Today: The Causes of Christian Forgetfulness

JEFF TURNER

Why would a Christian forget about Christ as they go through daily life? One reason is the ongoing presence of sin within us. Despite being regenerated, we are not yet completely free from the influence of sin and death. The remnants of our old nature keep us from fully focusing on Christ.

Another reason is the overwhelming influence of earthly things. Although these things are insignificant compared to Christ, their closeness to us makes them more impactful. Just as the moon has a stronger effect on ocean tides because of its proximity, earthly concerns can dominate our thoughts and push Christ to the background.

Our forgetfulness is also linked to the natural tendencies of the human heart. We are easily distracted by immediate concerns and pleasures, which often overshadow our spiritual focus. These distractions, though seemingly minor, can draw our attention away from the eternal and divine.

Ultimately, our forgetfulness is a reflection of our inner struggles. We are constantly battling with our own sinful nature and the allure of earthly things. This ongoing conflict makes it challenging to maintain a steady focus on Christ, even though we know He should be our central concern.

Despite these challenges, it’s crucial to recognize and address these issues. Acknowledging the reasons for our forgetfulness can help us strive to keep Christ at the forefront of our minds and hearts.

Thought for today: The Challenge of Remembering Christ

JEFF TURNER

It may seem surprising, but Christians can forget Christ. This forgetfulness is hinted at in texts that caution believers about their tendency to overlook Jesus, despite the deep gratitude and love that should keep Him in their thoughts. Such reminders are necessary because our memories can be unreliable, often causing us to forget Him who sacrificed so much for us.

This issue isn’t just a hypothetical concern; it’s a reality that many experience. It’s startling to think that those who have been redeemed by Christ’s sacrifice could ever forget Him. After all, how could someone who has been loved with such an everlasting love possibly neglect the memory of their Savior?

Yet, this is a common struggle. We find ourselves remembering everything but Christ. Everyday distractions, personal ambitions, and worldly concerns easily crowd out our focus on Jesus. We seem to remember things that do us no good while failing to keep Jesus central in our thoughts.

The problem lies in our human nature. Even after our spiritual rebirth, we still carry the remnants of sin and corruption. This internal struggle can make it hard to maintain a constant, focused remembrance of Christ. Our hearts are not purely regenerated; they are still tainted by our old nature, leading us to forget the one we should remember the most.

The constant bombardment of daily life and earthly matters also contributes to this forgetfulness. Much like how the moon’s closer proximity affects the tides more than the sun’s greater size, our immediate concerns often overshadow the eternal significance of Christ. This proximity of worldly matters makes them more pressing in our daily lives, causing us to forget the eternal truths.

Have you struggled to keep Christ in your thoughts amid the word’s distractions?

Everything around us is constantly changing. The snow on mountaintops melts in the summer, running down as rivers, only to be covered again by fresh snow when storms come. The ocean, vast and powerful, loses water to the sky as the sun evaporates it. Even the sun needs to be refueled by the Almighty to keep burning.

Our bodies also change over time. The cells in my body today are probably not the same ones I had a few years ago. My body is constantly shedding old parts and gaining new ones. Though it looks similar, it’s always being renewed in small ways.

The earth itself is in a constant state of change, like a flowing river where water moves on, but the river remains. Yet, God is different. He is spirit, not made of anything physical that changes, so He stays the same forever.

God has never aged or grown weaker. He doesn’t get tired or forgetful. He is always the same – the eternal “I AM.” Even when He became a man in the person of Jesus, His divine nature did not change. From His birth in a manger to His death on the cross, He remained fully God.

None of God’s qualities change. He is as powerful now as He was when He created the universe. His wisdom and knowledge are the same as they were when He planned the world and our salvation. His love, justice, and truth are unchanging, solid like a rock that nothing can move.

God’s plans don’t change either. When He decides to do something, it will happen. No force in heaven or on earth can stop His plans. He doesn’t need to alter them because they are always perfect from the start.

Lastly, God’s promises remain true. He never breaks them. When He says He will do something, He will do it, whether it’s offering us salvation or holding us accountable. His promises are as unchangeable as He is.

One of the most profound truths about God is that His essence—His very being—never changes. While we might not fully understand what God is, we can be certain that He remains the same throughout time. This unchanging essence is what makes God completely trustworthy and reliable.

Jesus’ teachings do not change. Hebrews 13 tells us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever. Do not be misled by varied and strange teachings…”

The concept of God’s unchanging essence might be difficult to grasp, but it’s a foundational truth that gives us a sense of security. In a world where everything else is subject to change, God stands as the one constant. His nature, His love, His justice—they all remain the same, giving us a firm foundation to rely on.

This unchanging nature of God also has practical implications for our lives. It means that God’s promises are always dependable. When He says He loves us, that love is constant and unchanging. When He promises to guide us, we can trust that He will do so faithfully. This assurance allows us to live with confidence, knowing that God is always with us and for us.

Understanding God’s unchanging essence deepens our faith and strengthens our relationship with Him. It reminds us that God is not like us—He is perfect, holy, and constant. This realization helps us to trust Him more fully and to rest in His unchanging nature, knowing that He is always working for our good.

In a world where everything seems to be constantly changing, one of the most comforting truths for Christians is that God never changes. The Bible tells us, “I am Jehovah, I change not.” This unchanging nature of God is a solid foundation on which we can build our lives. No matter what happens, we can trust that God remains the same—yesterday, today, and forever.

This truth is incredibly reassuring, especially in times of uncertainty. When everything around us is in flux, we can take comfort in knowing that God’s character, love, and promises are constant. We don’t have to worry about God suddenly changing His mind or abandoning us. His faithfulness endures through all generations.

God’s unchanging nature also means that His promises are reliable. When God says He will never leave us or forsake us, we can trust that He means it. When He promises to work all things for our good, we can be sure that He will keep His word. This consistency gives us the confidence to face life’s challenges with courage and hope.

In our ever-changing world, God’s unchanging nature is a source of great comfort and strength. It reminds us that we are not alone, and that we can rely on God no matter what comes our way. His constancy is our anchor, keeping us steady in the midst of life’s storms.
