A thought for Tuesday: Expanding the Mind Through God

Many people believe that studying God’s creation and man’s actions within His creation (science, history, or philosophy) can expand the mind. While these subjects are valuable, nothing broadens our understanding more than studying God. When we focus on who God is, we stretch our minds beyond the limits of earthly knowledge and begin to grasp the infinite.

This kind of study is different from any other. It challenges us to think deeply, question our assumptions, and seek truth in a way that nothing else can. The more we learn about God, the more our minds are expanded and our perspectives are broadened. We start to see the world in a new light, understanding that there is more to life than what we can see or touch.

Studying God also has a profound impact on our lives. It changes the way we think, the way we live, and the way we interact with others. As our understanding of God grows, so does our love for Him and for the people around us. We become more compassionate, more patient, and more willing to serve others, reflecting the character of God in our daily lives.

In a world where knowledge is often equated with power, the study of God offers something far greater—wisdom. This wisdom doesn’t just come from knowing facts or theories; it comes from knowing God Himself. It’s a wisdom that guides us, shapes us, and ultimately leads us to live lives that honor and glorify Him.

Romans 11:33 (NIV,) says, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!” This verse highlights the infinite nature of God’s wisdom, reinforcing the concept that studying God stretches our minds beyond earthly limits.

A thought for Monday: The Humbling Power of Knowing God

Nothing humbles us more than thinking about God. When we reflect on His greatness and majesty, we can’t help but see how small we are in comparison. God’s infinite nature shows us just how limited our understanding is, and this realization brings us to our knees in humility.

This humility is essential for our spiritual growth. It reminds us that we are not the center of the universe—God is. It keeps us from becoming arrogant or self-centered, helping us stay grounded in the truth of who God is and who we are. Humility opens the door to a deeper relationship with God because it allows us to approach Him with the respect and reverence He deserves.

When we recognize our own smallness in the face of God’s greatness, we also become more grateful for His grace and love. Despite our limitations, God chooses to reveal Himself to us and invite us into a relationship with Him. This humbling truth should fill our hearts with gratitude and a desire to know Him more.

The more we think about God, the more we grow in wisdom and understanding. This wisdom doesn’t come from our own knowledge or abilities, but from acknowledging God’s greatness and our need for Him. In this way, humility becomes the foundation for true spiritual growth and maturity.

Jeremiah 9:23-24 emphasizes the supreme value of knowing and understanding God. It says, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,’ declares the Lord.”

Paul’s Perseverance in Spreading the Gospel

Paul and his companions traveled from Cyprus to the region of Pamphylia in modern-day Turkey. After arriving in Perga, John Mark returned to Jerusalem, while Paul and Barnabas continued north to Antioch in Pisidia. Following their usual practice, they visited the local synagogue, where Paul spoke about Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promises. His audience included Jews, converts to Judaism, and Gentiles who worshipped the God of Israel. Many were curious, especially when Paul mentioned Jesus’ resurrection, and they asked him to return the following Sabbath.

The next Sabbath, a large crowd gathered, including many Gentiles. This success angered the Jewish leaders, who stirred up opposition and eventually drove Paul and Barnabas out of the city. However, the two missionaries did not give up. They traveled to Iconium and continued to share the gospel with those willing to listen.

When Paul first preached at the synagogue, many were eager to hear more, especially the Gentiles. However, the following week, the large crowd and the positive response of the Gentiles sparked jealousy among the Jewish leaders. They spoke against Paul, contradicting and insulting him.

Responses to the gospel can vary greatly. Some may be indifferent, others hostile, but some will be receptive. Despite opposition, Paul and Barnabas continued their mission, showing that rejection should not deter the sharing of the gospel.

Paul and Barnabas boldly stated that the gospel was first offered to the Jews as God’s chosen people, but since the Jews rejected it, they would now focus on the Gentiles. The Gentiles were overjoyed, as they were now included in God’s plan of salvation without needing to adopt Jewish customs. This moment highlighted both God’s sovereignty and the responsibility of individuals to respond in faith.

After their second sermon, the message of Jesus spread throughout the region. However, the Jewish leaders, along with influential city officials, stirred up persecution, forcing Paul and Barnabas to leave the area. Following Jesus’ instructions, they shook the dust off their feet as a sign of moving on, and continued their mission in Iconium. Despite the opposition, the believers in Antioch remained joyful and filled with the Holy Spirit, finding strength in the transformation brought by the gospel.

Debra Perry-Reed, known as the original soprano of the beloved Southern Gospel group The Perrys, has spent years touching hearts with her music. Today, she leads her own group, Debra Perry and Jaidyn’s Call, named in honor of her son Jaidyn, whose life has been a powerful testimony of faith, hope, and the enduring love of God.

Jaidyn was born with a rare condition called Hydranencephaly, a diagnosis that left doctors with little hope for his survival beyond his first year. But in a miraculous journey that defied all odds, Jaidyn recently celebrated his 18th birthday—a milestone that speaks volumes about the power of prayer and the strength of his family’s faith.

The purpose of Jaidyn’s Call is not only to share their music but also to share their testimony of God’s grace through the challenges they’ve faced with Jaidyn and their daughter Ashley. Each performance is a testament to the miracles they’ve witnessed and the unwavering belief that God is with them every step of the way.

Debra Perry and Jaidyn’s Call’s latest song, “The Sound Of His Voice,” is a beautiful reflection of this faith. In Debra’s words, “This is a Bible song. It talks about how the Lord put the world into existence, how his voice turned the darkness to light.” The lyrics resonate deeply with the group’s mission, reminding listeners of the power and authority of God’s voice in every aspect of life.

“His words prevailed, but they never failed to show us his power and mind,” Debra continues, capturing the essence of the song. “The seas roll apart at his bidding, and the mountains move as he demands. He can whisper or shout, but without a doubt, the whole world is at his command.”

This week, as Jaidyn was admitted to the hospital for a virus, the message of this song becomes even more poignant. It serves as a reminder that even in the most challenging moments, the sound of God’s voice is a constant source of comfort and strength. For Debra, Christopher, and their family, it’s a song that reflects their journey—a journey marked by divine intervention, perseverance, and an unwavering trust in the Lord.
