Every person is equipped with a conscience, an inner moral filter meant to help distinguish right from wrong. The degree to which scripture has shaped that conscience directly affects how reliable its guidance will be.

Not all consciences are equally trustworthy. Ongoing, unchecked involvement in wrongdoing can dull or harden a person’s moral sense over time. The common advice to simply “follow your conscience” falls short as a standalone principle.

The only safe approach is to test the conscience against scripture itself, asking honestly whether a particular choice aligns with what God has said. Conscience left unchecked and unrefined by biblical truth can lead to serious errors in judgment.

For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
