Seeing Life’s Challenges the Right Way

JEFF TURNER

Many Christians turn to 1 Corinthians 10:13 during hard times, remembering God’s promise to provide a way to endure temptation. In the original Greek, the same word is used for both “temptation” and “trial.” I believe this means that life’s challenges can be either, depending on how we respond.

If a difficulty leads a person to sin, through doubt, accusing God, or losing trust, it has become a temptation that succeeded. But if the same situation is met with prayer, trust in God, and patience for His deliverance, it becomes a trial that builds strength.

Temptations pull a person toward sin, while trials grow a believer’s faith. The very same problem can be one or the other, based on our reaction. God calls us to view life’s struggles as opportunities to grow in faith and serve Him better, trusting His promises to guide us through.

Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Trials and Temptation

JEFF TURNER

Some believers accept that God is in control of all things. But questions come up when talking about how His control relates to temptation and sin. One verse that raises this issue is 1 Corinthians 10:13, where Paul says God won’t let believers be tempted beyond what they can handle and will also provide a way out. This might sound like God is the one who sends temptation, but that isn’t what Paul means.

In fact, James 1:13 tells us God does not tempt anyone, nor can He be tempted by evil. What God does allow, however, are tests. I’m talking about situations that challenge a person’s faith and character. The Greek word for “temptation” can also mean a test or trial, and doesn’t always imply something sinful.

When a difficult situation arises, it can either strengthen a believer’s faith or expose weakness. If a person resists sin in that moment, the trial becomes a test they have overcome. But if they give in, it becomes temptation that led to sin. God permits trials in a fallen world, but He never entices anyone to do wrong.

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin.

Finding Strength in Faith During Hard Times

FLOYD ROGERS

When difficult burdens come into your life, how do you deal with them? Do you follow what the Bible teaches, or do you find yourself complaining and trying to avoid them in some way? It’s an important question because how we respond matters to God.

Another question to consider is whether God puts limits on the burdens we face. Just like a bridge has a sign showing how much weight it can hold, God knows our personal load limit. He understands exactly how much each person can handle.

It would go against God’s loving nature to allow a burden so heavy that it would completely crush us without offering His strength and guidance. He always provides the wisdom and help we need when we choose to rely on Him.

No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and God is faithful, so He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
